Privacy policy

We collect as little as possible. This page explains what that is.

Last updated: October 2026

Information we collect

  • Server logs. Our hosting provider, Netlify, automatically processes basic technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request. This is used to deliver the site and keep it secure.
  • Contact form. If you send us a message, we receive the name, email address and message you enter. We use it only to reply to you.
  • Addresses and locations you look up. When you search an address, it passes through our hosting provider to the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder to find its coordinates. Your browser then sends those coordinates to FEMA's flood map service and the National Weather Service, and through our hosting provider to NOAA's river gauge service. If FEMA or the National Weather Service can't be reached directly, the request may pass through our hosting provider instead. The map images are loaded from the U.S. Geological Survey and FEMA. If you choose "Use my location," your browser asks your permission first and the coordinates are used the same way. We don't store the addresses or locations you look up, and we don't keep a record of your searches.
  • Remembered search. The lookup remembers the last address you searched in your own browser's storage so it can show it next time. Clear your browser's site data to remove it.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: how many people visit, which pages they read, roughly where they are, what device they use and how they found us. Google Analytics sets cookies to tell visits apart. We use this only to improve the site, and we don't use it to identify you. The addresses and locations you look up aren't sent to Google Analytics.

  • In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, analytics cookies are off until you choose "Allow analytics" in the banner.
  • Everywhere else, analytics is on by default. You can turn it off at any time with the "Cookie settings" link at the bottom of every page.
  • You can also block Google Analytics on all sites with Google's opt-out browser add-on.

Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. Your cookie choice is remembered in your browser.

Advertising

We don't show ads at the moment. If we add advertising, such as Google AdSense, we will update this page first, and visitors in regions that require consent will be asked before any advertising cookies are set.

Sharing

We don't sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers that run this site, such as our hosting provider, with the government data services described above, or when the law requires it.

Your choices

You can ask us to delete any message you have sent us by contacting us.

Children

This site is meant for a general adult audience. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page.
